Areas of Somerset - Mendip & The Mendip Hills
The Mendips are a range of limestone hills in the north of the county (a few miles south of Bristol/Bath). Designated an Area of Outstanding National Beauty, they offer magnificent views over the Levels around Glastonbury and across to the Bristol Channel many miles away.
Visitor to this area will enjoy exploring the hills and visiting industrial heritage sites, including Roman lead and tin mines at Charterhouse and near Priddy. William Blake's 'and did those feet in ancient times' hymn Jerusalem is understood to have been inspired by this landscape. Priddy Sheep Fair, first held in 1348, is still held every August.
