Ham Wall Nature Reserve (RSPB), Meare

Ham Wall, a newly created wetland of over 200 hectares, is one of three RSPB reserves in the Somerset Levels and Moors. It lies in the northern part of the floodplain about 4.8 kilometres (3 miles) west of Glastonbury, within an area known as the Avalon Marshes, where some 8 square kilometres (3 square miles) of mixed wetland habitat have been created from old peat diggings.

As one of the largest reedbed establishment sites in the country, Ham Wall is an excellent opportunity for the RSPB to create important habitats for many of our vulnerable wetland animals and plants. The reserve is now a rich patchwork of reedbeds, wet scrub and open water, along with peripheral grassland and woodland.

Wildlife populations include otters and water voles, and dragonflies and butterflies are abundant until late summer. The winter brings large numbers of ducks and geese, including hundreds of gadwalls, shovelers, teal and wigeon. Millions of starlings come in to roost in the reedbed at dusk. And listen for the booming call of a male bittern.
