The Holy Well, Edington

The Holy Well is one of three ancient wells on the Polden Hills, the others residing in Chilton Polden and Shapwick. Edington Well is situated at the edge of the settlement and would have been used by pilgrims making their way to the Augustinian Friary in Burtle and to Glastonbury Abbey. The Holy Well is the best remaining example of the Holy Wells, mainly due to its restoration in 1937 by Capitan John Alexander Fownes Luttrell of Edington Manor to commemorate his wife, Charlotte Fownes Luttrell. In recent years, drainage works by Wessex Water near to the well have resulted in the well no longer functioning fully. The monument now lies in a less well preserved state but is an important landmark in the local area and worth a visit.
