Westonzoyland (Village), Nr BridgwaterWelcome to Westonzoyland, a peaceful village situated in the Somerset Levels, four miles from Bridgwater.
Lying only nine metres above sea level, Westonzoyland's past has been shaped by a struggle between man and water. In winter months Westonzoyland and its neighbouring villages of Middlezoy and Chedzoy and Othery became islands isolated by flood waters. Zoy used in these place names means island.
Today the area around the village is sensitively managed and is a haven for birds and wildlife. Visitors can explore how the flood waters have been managed by visiting Westonzoyland Pumping Station.
Westonzoyland is best known locally for its associations with The Battle of Sedgemoor, the last battle on English soil, where on the 6th July 1685, protestant James Duke of Monmouth challenged Catholic King James II for the throne of England. Visitors can follow these events on a short trail around the village and battlefield. Included in the trail is a visit to the historic Church of St Mary's, which was used after the Battle of Sedgemoor as a prison for 400 defeated rebels. A small booklet and trail guide is available from the local village shop.
On the outskirts of the village lies an abandoned RAF Second World War airbase which was used by the 101 Airborne Division during D-Day and also by Lysander aircraft which took secret agents into occupied France.
The Sedgemoor Inn nearby is ideal for a coffee or lunches and a convenience store and local butchers shop are located nearby. There are a number of bed and breakfast establishments around the village. Traditional willow growers are also situated on the edge of the village.
