About Us

If you live in Somerset you know how true is Rhodes aphorism 'to be born English is to have won first prize in the great lottery of life'.

Somerset brings together a wonderfully diverse landscape, across all the seasons, and a long settled community with old time values, humour and care for each other and our environment. Hidden Somerset has quietly been offering the world its best since Alfred the Great in 870 (Athelney/Ling) and St Dunstan (born in Baltonsborough in 909)!

Hidden Somerset is made up of members who want to share this good fortune. A 'not for profit', co-operative initiative we seek to work with the great diversity of Somerset interests to offer the fullest flavour of our very widely differing local communities.

Funded from a variety of sources (see below) and by membership fees Hidden Somerset brings the best of the hard to find through then wonders of the Internet.

Hidden Somerset works closely with businesses, communities and events across the county, raising the awareness and profile of the Internet as an effective marketing and business tool. The project acts as a 'front page' to promote the lesser known, hidden events, attractions, businesses and communities in the county, demonstrating that Somerset is an ideal tourist destination and not just a place to pass through on the way to Devon or Cornwall.

This website is not just for the tourist, we welcome local Somerset residents to use the site and hope that it will be a valuable tool to discover more about the secrets of their county.

The concept of Hidden Somerset was first realised in 2001 after the Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak, when the closing of footpaths and byways highlighted the fragility of rural communities. The subsequent closures of pubs and many local shops and post offices showed a possible future of declining services and the quality of life in our small communities. Hidden Somerset aims to help reverse these effects, promoting tourism, highlighting the hidden gems in rural Somerset, increasing recognition of the county and boosting spending in the local economy.

Hidden Somerset is a not for profit project funded by the Levels and Moors Leader+ and Somerset Rural Renaissance Partnership, and managed by the Community Council for Somerset (a Company limited by Guarantee, registered in England and Wales No 3541219, and a registered Charity, No 1069260).
